Borrowed from Arabic بَاذِنْجَان (bāḏinjān), from Persian بادنجان (bâdenjân), earlier بادنگان (bâdengân), an Indo-Aryan borrowing, from Sanskrit वातिगगम (vātiga-gama, eggplant).
