Inherited from Old Swedish berøva, from Middle Low German beroven, from Proto-Germanic *biraubōną. By surface analysis, be- +‎ röva.

Cognate of Danish berøve, Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌱𐍉𐌽 (biraubōn), Dutch beroven, English bereave.
