Etymology

From Middle High German behalten, from Old High German bihaltan, from Proto-West Germanic *bihaldan. Equivalent to be- +‎ halten. Cognates include Saterland Frisian behoolde (to keep), Dutch behouden (to keep, restrain, preserve), English behold, Danish and Norwegian beholde (to keep) and Swedish behålla (to keep).
