From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bḗˀgtei; cognate with Latvian bêgt, Proto-Slavic *běťi (to flee, run). From Proto-Indo-European *bʰégʷeti, from *bʰegʷ- (run, flee), with long vowel due to Winter's Law. Cognate with Ancient Greek φέβομαι (phébomai, flee, take flight). Possibly also Tocharian A pukäl, Tocharian B pikul (year).
