Etymology

[edit]

From Old Norse bón, bǿn, bœn.

The short /œ/ and the double n (if not they have dialectal origin) may have been borrowed from Danish plural form through the church (although not used in the Danish word in singular form, neither written nor spoken). Historical spellings point towards a loan from Riksmål spelling (but not necessary pronunciation): double n was before 1900 most common in Riksmål plural form (bønner), but not Riksmål singular (bøn), and neither common in Landsmål singular or plural (bøn, bønir). Double n in this word has no palatalization in northern dialects, what also points towards a loan from Riksmål or Danish (on pronunciation level).
