Etymology

A noun based on the verb avträda (to leave, to depart), cognate with Middle Low German aftrede. Used in the sense of a private place for retreat (i.e. an outhouse) since 1730. In order to avoid misunderstandings, the other senses have become less common and eventually obsolete.
