From Proto-Balto-Slavic *awinas, a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *h₃éwis. Cognate with Old Prussian awins, Latvian àuns, Proto-Slavic *ovьnъ. Equivalent to avi̇̀s (sheep) +‎ -inas.
