[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *aulios (whence also Latvian aũlis (“beehive”)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewlós, nominal form of *h₂ewlo- (“tube, hole, channel”). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *ulьjь (“beehive; opening”), Ancient Greek αὐλός (aulós, “tube, pipe”), Latin alvus (“belly, beehive”), etc.
