Etymology

From auto- (“reflexive, regarding or to oneself”) +‎ plushophilia (“the sexual attraction to plush toys”), from plush (“a plush toy”, noun) +‎ -o- (“a linking vowel inserted interconsonantally between two morphemes to ease pronunciation without contributing to the word's meaning”) +‎ -philia (“abnormal love of something”).

Coined in 2009 by the American psychologist, sexologist and physician Anne Lawrence.

As well, despite autoplushophiliacs often emulating plush animals in their role-plays, it does not mean that they are interested in bestiality (sexual encounters with live animals). In fact, it’s the plush aspect that is arousing to them.
