  1. (intransitive) to leave, retire from, quit [with aus (+ dative) ‘a club, organization, etc.’]
    Er ist aus dem Chor ausgetreten.
    He quit the choir.
  2. (transitive) to stamp out (a fire, etc.)
    Habt ihr das Lagerfeuer ausgetreten?
    Did y'all stamp out the campfire?
  3. (intransitive, euphemistic, often with müssen) to go (to the bathroom), to use the toilet
    Entschuldigen Sie, ich muss kurz austreten.
    Excuse me, I have to go use the bathroom.
    (literally, “Excuse me, I have to step out for a short while.”)
