Etymology

[edit]

aufeinander- +‎ liegen

[edit]

aufeinanderliegen (class 5 strong, third-person singular present liegt aufeinander, past tense lag aufeinander, past participle aufeinandergelegen, past subjunctive läge aufeinander, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. (intransitive) to lie on top of each other

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The most common auxiliary with aufeinanderliegen is haben: Sie haben aufeinandergelegen. In northern and central Germany, this form is strongly predominant and in some regions exclusive. In southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, sein is usual in the vernacular and also, alternatively, in standard usage: Sie sind aufeinandergelegen.
