[edit]Borrowed from Mexican Spanish ates, plural of ate (“quince jelly”) of Nahuatl origin, according to Cuadrado Muñiz (1972). In addition, Blust (2023) stated that the fruit was a native of tropical America, and introduced into Southeast Asia sometime during the 16th century.
