From a Vulgar Latin root *asstuppāre, from ad- + *stuppāre, from Latin stuppa. Compare Aromanian astup, astupari, Albanian shtupoj; cf. Sicilian stuppari, attuppari, Venetan stupar, Romansch stuppar, Italian stoppare, French étouper, Old Spanish estopar.
