[edit]Learned borrowing from Latin asthmaticus, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀσθματικός (asthmatikós, “afflicted with shortness of breath”), from ἆσθμα (âsthma, “short-drawn breath, panting”) (compare asthma). By surface analysis, asthma + -ic.
