From Ancient Greek ἀρχιδιδάσκαλος (arkhididáskalos, chief teacher), first used by Palladius of Galatia (5th century CE), from ἀρχι- (arkhi-, chief, arch-) + διδάσκαλος (didáskalos, teacher).
