[edit]From Ancient Greek ανυπόθετον (anupótheton), negation of Ancient Greek ὑπόθεσις (hupóthesis, “base, basis of an argument, supposition”, literally “a placing under”), itself from ὑπό (hupó, “below”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “I put, place”).
