[edit]From international scientific vocabulary, reflecting a New Latin combining form, from New Latin anthracites, from Ancient Greek ἄνθραξ (ánthrax), whence also Latin anthrax, whence English anthrax (because the black eschars of that disease are named for their resemblance to coals).
