[edit]From Old Norse alvara, from an adjective ǫlværr (“benevolent”), maybe from Middle Low German alwār (“true, kind, benevolent”), cognate with German albern (“silly”), Old High German alawāri (“true, friendly”), a compound of Proto-Germanic *allaz, *ala- (“all”) and *wēraz, *wērijaz (“true”).
