[edit]Cognate with Latvian elsuot (“to cough, sob, pant”), with further origin outside of Baltic unclear. The semantically closest root with a superficial phonetic similarity, Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁- (“quiet, calm”), cannot produce the Baltic terms.[1][2]
