almu
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Originally borrowed from Swedish almosa, ultimately from Ancient Greek ἐλεημοσύνη (eleēmosúnē), probably via New Testament (see etymology section for alms for more). The word, when borrowed, may have been interpreted as an adjective (compare -isa, adjective-forming suffix) and then subjected to a back-derivation.[1]
