[edit]Borrowed from Arabic عَظْم اَلْفِيل (ʕaẓm al-fīl, “elephant-bone”), from عَظْم (ʕaẓm, “bone”) + فِيل (fīl, “elephant”).
Cognate with Old Spanish almalfil.
