Etymology

From Old Irish aithis (reproach; disgrace),[1] from Proto-Celtic *ati-wissus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *éti (beyond) + *weyd- (to see, know).[2] Comparable to Proto-Germanic *idiwītą (disgrace, shame, disdain).
