[edit]From Proto-Finnic *ainaga, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *ainagaz (“sole”) (from *ainaz (“one”)), preserving the older meaning seen in the Latin cognate unicus (“unique”). Cognate with Estonian ainus, Votic ainõgo, Ingrian ainava, Livonian āinagi, Ludian ainag.
