[edit]From ā- + *hlocian, *holcian, from Proto-West Germanic *holhukōn, *hulhikōn (“to hollow out”), related to Proto-West Germanic *hulhikjan (“to create a concavity, cause to bend, curve”). Cognate with Middle Low German holken, hȫlken (“to hollow out, gouge”).
