[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *holukōn, *hulikōn (“to hollow out”), equivalent to holc + -ian. Related to Proto-West Germanic *hulikjan (“to bend, curve”). Cognate with Middle Low German holken, hȫlken (“to hollow out, gouge”).
