[edit]From Proto-Polynesian *afiafi, a reduplicated form from Proto-Oceanic *ʀapi, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ʀabiqi, from Proto-Austronesian *ʀabiqi (“late afternoon, evening”). Cognate with Tagalog gabi (“night”).
