[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. The second element is either lāc (“action, sport, game”), its suffixed form -lāc (“-ation”), or an alteration of another element in assimilation to the aforementioned. The first element is unknown. It may possibly be from Proto-Germanic *aikaną (“to be furious, rage, be violent, terrorise”), related to Old English ācol (“frightened, terrified”). Alternatively, it may be a back-formation from āglǣċa, possibly a derivative of Proto-Germanic *agalaitijaz (“licentious, renegade, rogue”).
