Etymology

Old Danish aflat, from Middle Low German aflat (forgiveness), from verb aflaten (to forgive, to pardon), equivalent to af- (off) +‎ lade (to allow, to let). Cognate with Icelandic aflát, Swedish avlat, German Ablass, Dutch aflaat.
