[edit]Old Danish aflat, from Middle Low German aflat (“forgiveness”), from verb aflaten (“to forgive, to pardon”), equivalent to af- (“off”) + lade (“to allow, to let”). Cognate with Icelandic aflát, Swedish avlat, German Ablass, Dutch aflaat.
