[edit]From Proto-Italic *aitis, itself from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ey-. Cognate with Ancient Greek αἶσα (aîsa), Ancient Greek *αἶτος (*aîtos), and possibly Umbrian 𐌀𐌉𐌕𐌖 (aitu).
