[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyd-. Cognates include Old Armenian այտ (ayt, “cheek”), այտնում (aytnum, “to swell”), Ancient Greek οἰδέω (oidéō, “I swell”) and Old English āte (English oat). This word is only attested in glosses.
