From New Latin, from acanthus (thorn), (from Ancient Greek ἄκανθος (ákanthos)) + Ancient Greek πτερύγιον (pterúgion) diminutive of πτέρυξ (ptérux, wing, fin), from πτερόν (pterón, feather, wing).
