From French abandonner (to give up, abandon, forsake), from Middle French abandonner (abandon), either from abandon, abandun (abandonment) or from à ban doner, from Frankish *bann, from Proto-Germanic *bannaną (to proclaim, order, summon, ban), from Pre-Germanic *bʰh₂-nw-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to speak).
