[edit]From French abandonner (“to give up, abandon, forsake”), from Middle French abandonner (“abandon”), either from abandon, abandun (“abandonment”) or from à ban doner, from Frankish *bann, from Proto-Germanic *bannaną (“to proclaim, order, summon, ban”), from Pre-Germanic *bʰh₂-nw-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (“to speak”).
