Etymology

[edit]

Both toponyms are presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (common land) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (common land)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (section of forest intended for logging) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zijtaart and Zittert. See also Limburgish 't Zittert, 't Zitterd.

  • (Limburg) First attested as Ingen Sittardt in 1612.
  • (Noord-Brabant) First attested as siterde in the first quarter of the 13th century.
