Etymology

[edit]

First attested as in zitart in 1366. Presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (common land) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (common land)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (section of forest intended for logging) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zittard and Zittert.
