[edit]From Middle High German zelle, from Old High German zella, borrowed from Latin cella, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel-.[1] The cytological sense is possibly a semantic loan from German Zelle.
Cognate with German Zelle and Luxembourgish Zell.
