Learned borrowing from Late Latin Iācōbus, from Ancient Greek Ἰάκωβος (Iákōbos), from Biblical Hebrew יַעֲקֹב (yaʿăqōḇ, literally he will/shall heel), from עָקֵב (ʿāqēḇ, heel).
