[edit]From Medieval Latin Genuardi or Gennardi, genitive of the personal name Genardus, Ianardus,[1] from a Suevic personal name, from a compound of Proto-Germanic *gen-, of unknown meaning and origin,[2] and *wardaz (“guard”), "Genward's [villa]".
