Babels

[edit]

Hi! I just thought it was a good idea to have Babel language templates here just like the English Wikipedia has. Please add the appropriate language templates to your user pages and copy any missing templates and categories from Wikipedia. This way we'll soon complete the process. Post any comments and suggestions below. -- Krun 00:22, 16 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

the Babel "project" is great thing, but in my opinion in current approach (since beginning) there is one drawback: unless one knows the language s/he will not understand what language is in question. In my opinion there should be wording also in the language of wiki, here in English. I have proposed this change few times in Wikipedia but no much feedback, I hope we can make this change here, before it grows bigger in current way.
I have made examples here to illustrate it. Also i think that there is no point to write long text a la "this user can speak.." it will be enough to state level and language name. This "this user can speak.." -text can be placed on top of the templates. This way it is also easier with different languages, where words(/sentences) are "long", babel box doesn't "explode". --TarmoK 11:26, 28 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I second the motions.—msh210 22:04, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Interproject policy proposal

[edit]

I have drafted a proposal for an interproject Babel template standard at meta:Interproject Babel template standardization (proposal). Please review the proposal and improve and/or comment on it. --Ilmari Karonen 17:46, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Native bilinguals with different proficiency

[edit]

I'm a native English-French bilingual but my French isn't as good as as that of someone who grew up in France. How should I indicate that? -PierreAbbat 22:19, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

As a note one your user page. Since the Babel templates are self-descriptions, they are inherently inaccurate. --Connel MacKenzie 19:52, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

British English

[edit]
  • Is there a tag for British English as there is on Wikipedia? That would be very useful on here, as meanings and definitions may vary depending on the variety of English someone speaks. zigzig20s 09:16, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • it's probably deprecated, and doubtful Babel supports it, but in my personal notes I usually indicate dialects with dot TLD codes, e.g. eng.us, eng.uk, eng.au, eng.ca Nicoleta

Not adding this page to example categories

[edit]

Not a biggie, but the example Babel box adds this page the following categories: , , , , . Is there anyway we can show an avoid this? --Bequw 20:51, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

spoken vs. written skill

[edit]
  • Is there a way to differentiate (or create a new Babel) between spoken comprehension and written? For example, I can read French fairly well, but can't speak or understand verbal French at all (no offense to the Francophones, I've tried my best :-( ). Nicoleta 16:18, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps even four Babels: ability to speak language, ability to understand language when spoken, ability to write language, ability to read language; perhaps a subcode to indicate each? e.g. eng-5-5-5-5 or something Nicoleta 16:24, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
You could simply use two Babel templates with header= parameters. —Internoob (DiscCont) 23:04, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

missing languages/scripts

  • Can someone check my creation of the templates for jam, bs-0, enm-1, grc-0, jam-0, non-0 ? We need entries for jam-1 & Runr-0 too. Nicoleta

artificial languages not in ISO-639

[edit]

I added "art-goauld-1" for the Goa'uld language from Stargate SG-1. Is this the proper notation? I got it from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO,_SIL,_and_BCP_language_codes_for_constructed_languages . I'm shocked they got Klingon an ISO 639-3 code. Stargate is way better than Star Trek, they should definitely add Goa'uld too. Nicoleta

Articles?

[edit]

The help page mentions 'articles', but that was taken from Wikipedia. Since we don't have articles on Wiktionary, what would be a good substitution so that the different levels are still useful for us? —CodeCat 23:34, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

{{#babel: installation

Since the #babel: template integration into the Mediawiki software, we can delete the different boxes inventory. We might also delete the boxes themselves, but after having checked their presences on Translatewiki. JackPotte (talk) 20:08, 19 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

We discussed this somewhere (BP? GP?), and IIRC we decided to keep them.—msh210 (talk) 19:16, 21 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Greenlandic (kl)

[edit]

For some reason Babel templates in Greenlandic (kl) are in Danish. See my userpage. (Not only kl-0 but other kl signs as well.) --AuvajsAuvajs (talk) 00:38, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that you are using rather than cs, and/or that we don't have a Template:User kl-0. We do have Template:User kl-1, etc, so if you switched to using cs (our native Babel system) rather than (the Wikimedia-wide system), those would work. But we'd still need a kl-0. - -sche (discuss) 00:55, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for reply. But doesn't mean the Babel modul (or whatever it is - with that #) is buggy if it shows a wrong language? --AuvajsAuvajs (talk) 01:53, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it's a bug in the #Babel system. That system is maintained, not by en.wikt, but apparently by translatewiki.net: here are the pages, which someone has created with the wrong (Danish) text: kl-0, kl-1, kl-2, kl-3, kl-4, kl-5, kl-N. I'm not sure where translatewiki's equivalent of our grease pit is that you could report the problem. :/ - -sche (discuss) 02:23, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
I suspect the problem is that no one has translations for Greenlandic, and that Danish is used as a fallback because it's a relatively common second language in Greenland. Chuck Entz (talk) 03:52, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
If we could contact them, they could copy our text for Template:User kl-1 through Template:User kl-N. - -sche (discuss) 04:57, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
They have a link for Support on the left side of the page there, and you could start a thread. The whole operation looks like a Wikimedia spinoff, with the translations provided by a "community of translators", which sounds like a wiki. Chuck Entz (talk) 05:09, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
I tried to post a message to the Support thread but obviously even as a registered user with a confirmed email address I have no editing rights on the site so it's hard to make a bug report there. If someone with editing rights can make a bug report that would be appreciated. thanks. --AuvajsAuvajs (talk) 13:43, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Auvajs I posted about this on Wikipedia and User:Snaevar updated one of the templates (kl-0); presumably you could ask Snaevar to update the rest (kl-1 etc, which are still in Danish). - -sche (discuss) 03:12, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It already works on cs.wikt but not here. Any idea why? In both cases I used the same method. I will ask Snaevar. --Auvajs (talk) 08:58, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I can not add PASHTO in my Babel Box

[edit]

The language Pashto is missing in my Babel Box Adjutor101 (talk) 08:03, 2 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Fixed. We didn't have a template for Pashto fluency yet, so I made one using the text of Wikipedia's (and the guts/formatting of Template:User fr). - -sche (discuss) 03:22, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Written/spoken

[edit]

Since I'm a native Sweed I can understand Norwegan almost with no difficulties. Some dialects might confuse me a bit but overall I understand 99%. About Danish there's a pretty big change between written and spoken since they're so full of oat meal (sorry Danes🖐🏻). I understand about as much written Norwegian and Danish since they're so similar but I understand about 15-20 % of spoken Danish with major difficulties. Can someone make a parameter like spoken= or written=. Same with other languages with other alphabeths that one might not be use to. Perhaps some only learnt spoken chinese but not written for example.Jonteemil (talk) 21:01, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I am a native speaker of the Mi'kmaq language, identified as mic by ISO 639-3. When I put mic in the Babel template, it doesn't work properly. What am I doing wrong? YvesRetailleau (talk) 21:41, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Setting up a gender marker

[edit]

Hi! I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the grammatical gender marker to work. This is what I've already tried in a Babel template:

{ {Babel|pl|g=-} }

{ {Babel|g=-|pl} }

(without the spaces)

Could someone point me to where I'm wrong? 82calamities (talk) 10:02, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@82calamities: Babel boxes are for indicating what languages you speak and what technical skills you have. Gender- grammatical or otherwise- is completely irrelevant. Gender can be indicated using a setting in your user preferences. Chuck Entz (talk) 10:57, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think that the grammatical gender is relevant here. It's used when gendered languages show in the Babel boxes. The user gender preference that is set by the user page-wide doesn't seem to affect the Babel boxes - I changed my preference to female pronouns and my boxes remain masculine/"default" despite that.
On another note, the grammatical gender *is* mentioned as an optional piece of code in the Babel help page. 82calamities (talk) 16:58, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I found the troublemaker. Not all Babel language boxes have the gender option implemented. Russian and Latin have those, for example, while Polish lacks that completely. Adding "g=f" to my Babel code worked on Russian and Latin, certainly. Now I need to find out how to edit the Polish Babel boxes for everyone, not just me... 82calamities (talk) 17:09, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
