peashooter n

A toy weapon consisting of a tube through which dried peas or small objects are blown. A person who uses such a device. (slang) Any small or ineffective gun or weapon. The American children’s author Jean Merrill was born on this day in 1923. Her best known work, The Pushcart War, about a “war” on the streets of New York City between trucking companies and pushcart owners who use peashooters as weapons to disrupt the trucks, was published 60 years ago in 1964.
