Spellings and diacritics

[edit]

Tones

[edit]

The tones should be marked in the headword line and not in page titles. High tones are marked with the acute accent (´), low tones with the grave accent (`), and mid tones are unmarked except in cases of a tone-bearing syllabic nasal, in which case a macron (¯) is used.

Contour tones are to be transcribed as sequences of level tones. When a high tone follows a low tone it should be marked with an acute accent (ˊ). In comparison to earlier orthographies:

  • lòózùn rather than lǒzùn
  • àlùfáà rather than àlùfâ
  • èdé rather than èdě

Nasal vowels

[edit]

Nasal vowels should be represented with the sequence V + n as follows:

  • ã as <an>
  • ĩ as <in>
  • ũ as <un>

With the exception of when they come after /n/ or /m/ — /mã.dã/ is written as madan.

Elongated nasal vowels should be written with a dash (-) — /gã̀ã́/ is written as gàn-án.

Letters

Nupe uses these letters:
