First attested as uuarmelde in 918-948. Derived from the hydronym *Warmundia, derived in turn from Old Dutch *war-m (water) suffixed with the hydronymic suffix -nd. Compare Mijnden, Warmenhuizen, Werkhoven and Wormer.
