Etymology

  • (Friesland) First attested as Fesckbueren and Vischburen in 1511. Calque of West Frisian Fiskbuorren, a compound of fisker (fisherman) and the plural form of buer (house, cottage).
  • (Noord-Holland) Compound of vis (fish) and buurt (neighbourhood, quarter). The majority of the neighbourhood's early inhabitants were fishermen.
