[edit]I'm guessing that all the terms ending with - are verbs. Should the infinitive ending be included on these? You mentioned that it's reconstructed as *-tēk, which would make it a cognate of the Finnic ending. I'm assuming that at least in Northern Sami, only the -t remains of this ending, although I suppose it's possible that the attested ending is actually a result of contraction after loss of the vowel (which would explain why it's not voiced). Do other Samic languages preserve more? —CodeCat 00:31, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hyphens mostly indicate verb stems; a couple may still be nominal or adjectival stems only preserved in derivatives (though I've attempted to unpack these to the actual derivatives). You're free to mass-edit the endings in if you'd like to, though (we can handle the edge cases later once actually creating the pages).
- Southern Sami retains -dh with both the consonants. I don't think the vowel survives anywhere, but it triggers umlaut effects that show it was still present in Proto-Samic. --Tropylium (talk) 18:13, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
- I'll add the ending to all the hyphens; can you sort out the ones that are not verbs? Also, can you add more descendants to *-tēk? —CodeCat 18:21, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Glosses
[edit]It would be very helpful if the links also had glosses. That way I could more easily connect attested words to the reconstructions. Could you do this? —CodeCat 21:03, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- That's the most logical next step for me to do here, yes. No guarantees on when I'll find time for this, though. --Tropylium (talk) 07:05, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Missing words
[edit]- *numpē (“second, other”) (Northern nubbi, Skolt nu´bb)
- *keasē (“summer”) (Northern geassi; appears related to Finnic Lua error in Module:parameters at line 573: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "fiu-fin-pro" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E.)
I'll collect some words that I found but are missing from this list. I'll leave it up to you to verify them and add them. Please remove them from this list when you've added them? —CodeCat 00:34, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. 'Summer' is indeed an omission on my part, probably due to the stem-homophonic 'to pull'. 'Other' is absent since Lehtiranta does not cover any pronoun roots (cf. also the lack of *mon 'I', *ton 'thou', *tāt 'this'). --Tropylium (talk) 07:37, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
I found another: *vuojŋë (“spirit”) (Northern vuoigŋa) < Uralic *wajŋe. —CodeCat 02:32, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- The same root as *vuojŋëtēk (“to breathe”), for the record. --Tropylium (talk) 02:50, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- Does Uralic have zero derivation between nouns and verbs like that? I thought stems were inherently verbal or nominal. —CodeCat 02:57, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Is the gemination of Northern Sami irregular, or is there a mistake in the list? —CodeCat 19:38, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
- Looks irregular to me at first glance, though this could also be due to some further suffix (overlong vowels in suffixes regularly lead to gemination in NS). --Tropylium (talk) 11:03, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
*cipcētēk
[edit]I came across *cipcē- in Álgu, but the Lule and Northern descendants appear to reflect contracted verbs. I'm not sure whether the other languages do as well. Should this really be *cipcëjëtēk? —Rua (mew) 20:39, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
