Bots

[edit]

Am I allowed to programme my own bot to use on Wiktionary? Pkbwcgs (talk) 11:19, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

WT:BOT Equinox 12:04, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I realised that it is quite hard to use a bot so I probably won't use a bot just yet. Pkbwcgs (talk) 12:08, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I would like a bot that can revert vandalism in seconds. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:50, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Adminship

[edit]

How can I become an administrator on Wiktionary? Pkbwcgs (talk) 13:11, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Others might not agree, but I would personally suggest:
* Read as much of the documentation/FAQs as you can stomach (then you'd already know about bots and admins without having to ask).
* Work on the content (words, etymologies, pronunciations) as well as "meta"-stuff like templates and vandals.
* Do things because they need doing, not because they might score brownie points (e.g. don't waste time "welcoming" new users who have never made an edit).
* Be patient. You're not gonna pop up and become an admin in one month.

Archiving

[edit]

How can I archive my talk page? I can't find any way to do it. Is there a bot that can archive talk pages or do I need to do it manually? Pkbwcgs (talk) 15:56, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think most users do it manually. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 00:47, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

"Do not play with the sandbox"

[edit]

Experimenting is precisely what the sandbox exists for. Equinox 18:09, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

But there is so much vandalism going on at the sandbox. I need to revert a lot of vandalism as a lot of users are destroying the sandbox. There is no such policy as do not vandalise any pages except the sandbox so that is why I am reverting a lot of changes at the sandbox. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:12, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

No. It is not possible to vandalise the sandbox. Every so often we reset it. Don't even bother looking at it. SemperBlotto (talk) 18:14, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

After all that vandalism, I think it is time to reset the sandbox. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:15, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
All done. I resetted the sandbox. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:20, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Um ... it is actually possible to vandalise a sandbox: write BLP violations, copyvios or other truly degrading material. Just saying ... StevenJ81 (talk) 19:35, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

"Fake" etymology

[edit]

Like I said, can ANYONE cite a single source for that "crocodile tears"? It is of equal il/legitimacy if there is nowhere else that has ever mentioned that besides the page itself, every example links their source right back here in a recursive loop. Give me one reason why that tears tripe isn't as fake as the mouths explanation? You can't. Meanwhile it has been mentioned multiple times in the same discussion on the lernu forums "My understanding is that crocodiles are supposed to have big mouths and small brains, which is how the expression originated.", which is further corroborated in J.F. Conroy's Dictionary and Phrasebook where it also gives kajmani and aligatori as accepted terms for the same action denoted by krokodili. Therefore it is clear that the connotation is to the physical resemblance of the creature, and not any invented "tears" nonsense, as "alligator tears" and "cayman tears" are not accepted idioms, and yet they are used for the same verb anyway.

At least I can cite a non-wiki source, whereas there is not a single shred of evidence for the one you seem to have no problem with. "Crocodiles having large mouths have nothing to do with crocodile tears"? Yeah that's right, and crocodile tears have absolutely nothing to do with the verb. The administrative favoritism in play here is plainly evident.

If you want to challenge an etymology, you add the template {{rfv-etymology}} and use the "+" in the box it generates to post an explanation at the Etymology scriptorium. Complaining at talk pages tends to be a waste of time. Chuck Entz (talk) 13:32, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I am going this challenge this etymology and find out what happens next. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:09, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@76.28.243.251 What are lernu forums anyway? Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:11, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pkbwcgs If you are unaware of the most basic tenets of esperanto including the single biggest online community you have neither the knowledge nor grounding to challenge official publications on the matter. You do not know what you're talking about. The etymology has been sourced, multiple times. The matter is finished. You are clearly betraying your bias at hand.
@76.28.243.251 I am not biased. I still can't find any sources and the sources you have given are from international websites. One of the sources you have given is just about the language Esperanto and nothing to do with Krokodili. I am still doubtful about the two source whether they are valid or not. Now, please don't be rude. I have been seeing your rude behaviour across lots of users. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:49, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pkbwcgs When my sourced etymology has been reverted multiple times, and the one which has NEVER had a source is untouched by those same users, I do in fact consider that to be the apogee of rudeness and calling them out on it cannot be considered any moreso. And now international websites somehow lack all validation? This is news to me.
@76.28.243.251 I have checked all the sources before telling you that they are not valid and I still think that they are not valid. Please do not keep reverting other's changes. This is edit warring and it is very bad. I am giving you kind messages and I am not getting frustrated. I would like you to leave this up to the Etymology scriptorium to decide. I am glad that you are now acting in a good way so well done. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:17, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pkbwcgs And now you would ask me to refrain from the exact thing you and others have continued to do. Can't make this up....
@76.28.243.251 I haven't made this up. Please have a look at your talk page. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:36, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Deletion Request

[edit]

Can you please delete this following page as I don't need it as my test to get the gadget Twinkle has failed:

Thank you. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:18, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for deleting the page. Pkbwcgs (talk) 20:04, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Protection

[edit]

This following page should be protected as it has a long history of vandalism this year and last year:

Thank you. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:28, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Between last year and this year, XXXI has been vandalised thirteen times which is why I am requesting protection for this page. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:31, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

For some odd reason, all pages starting with XXX are extreme vandal targets. I have protected many, but the vandals just move to the next unprotected one. Equinox 20:56, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I agree to your point but I don't understand why are they targets for vandals. Thank you for protecting all those pages. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:01, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
If I may venture a guess as to why pages starting with XXX are more prone to vandalism, I would say that it has to do with pornography. I suppose that Equinox kind of already suspects this correlation ;-) --Robbie SWE (talk) 21:11, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't think I want to talk about such stuff but I fully agree to what you said. I think it is the fact that IPs intentionally misread what the pages meant and start vandalising them. I think that we do need something like Wiktionary:Adminstrators' noticeboard just like [1] and [2] to have such discussions. I think it is best to start it very soon but it requires a lot of work. I know that lots of users have been campaigning for it but firstly, I think a new Wikiproject should be started to create such thing. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:22, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Another page to protect due to excessive vandalism:

Thank you. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:31, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ethos

[edit]

Can you please check what declension is the latin word ethos. The page needs an inflection table. I am not sure about the declension but I tried to put in a table but I reverted my edit because I am not 100% sure. Pkbwcgs (talk) 14:52, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure whether this user should be blocked or not because on User talk:Chuck Entz, this IP has stated that s/he is User:BrunoMed who is currently blocked. Pkbwcgs (talk) 15:15, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Protection

[edit]

@Equinox In fact, all these pages need to be semi-protected due to excessive vandalism:

Thank you very much for your help in this pressing issue of vandalism on all xxx pages. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:48, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that this is the solution, since, as stated, vandals will just move on to the next XXX target. We cannot reasonably blanket-protect all such pages, as it will get in the way of legitimate editing. We might need some kind of abuse filter to detect typical edits: often the user just adds "XXX" or a similar nonsense string. Equinox 16:55, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox What is an abuse filter? Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:58, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Twinkle

[edit]

Why is Twinkle not available on this Wiki. It is important that users have notification of when they vandalise Wiktionary so that they won't do it again. I have saw Twinkle on the Simple English Wiktionary but not on this Wiki and it is making it harder to notify IPs and users whenever they make a bad edit. Secondly, there aren't enough warning templates so that users and IPs are notified whenever their edits are reverted. Does Wiktionary run manually? Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:43, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Vandals vandalise on purpose, out of malice. A message will not change their minds. We have far fewer users than WP so we can generally get by with rollback. Equinox 18:45, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Am I allowed to have rollback as I have been doing a lot of work on reverting vandalism? Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:51, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure whether rollback is available to non-administrators. By the way, not everyone follows your talk page, so better places to ask questions are WT:BP (general questions), WT:TR (questions about specific word entries in the dictionary), and WT:GP (technical issues like bots). Equinox 19:01, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Non-administrators can be rollbackers, but that is generally reserved for editors who have been around for a while and gained a good amount of community trust. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 19:36, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
How can I enable rollback? I have more than 850 edits and I haven't been doing any bad edits. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:38, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
You can't enable it yourself. Refer to my previous comment. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 21:23, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I can't see rollback on my preferences panel. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:27, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
You are not (yet) a member of the "rollbaker" group. When/if you are then the "rollback" function will be available on the "Recent changes" page and on revision history pages. SemperBlotto (talk) 21:38, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
