Sri Lankan Tamil /e/ realisation of இ

In your recents edits documenting spoken pronunciations of Tamil words for இடம் and திற, you seem to be focusing on colloquial pronunciations of words with இ in contexts where in SL Tamil, they would be realised as /ɨ/ just as with other vowels in SL Tamil that change around certain consonants. Other examples are /vɨːɳ/ and /kəːɭ/ for வீண் and கேள் respectively. Why did you give the SL Tamil as /e/ like in /eɖɐm/? I edited this, but what was your source (if you aren't in the SL Tamil community), or what dialect of SL Tamil are you familiar with that uses this pronunciations? I've herd both in Jaffna but the /e/-initial pronunciation cuud be due Tamil Nadu influence and not 'naitive'. I wuudn't document a pronunciation with ɨ tho (at leest not with slashes) as I think it's just allophonic. Not really. The /ɨ/ change is almost entirely predictable based on position in the word, surrounding consonants etc. I don't know enough about the specific differences between Indian Tamil dialects, however I'm pretty sure the same is true for most dialects. These are just realisations of the vowel sounds and an almost identical change to the vowel change in SL Tamil occurs in Irula as well, where Zvelebil transcribed the changed vowels with an umlaut (vëḷiya as an example). The change is exactly the same in nature as the /e/ realisation, except that the ɨ, ə, etc. realisations seem to be more older and conservative to Tamiloid languages where as the /e/ realisation of இ is perhaps due to Kannada/Telugu influence. Also, where have you heard the /e/ realisation in Jaffna? Not doubting or questioning your claim, but just interested as to where and maybe who (in Jaffna city, among younger people, or in KKS among elderly Indian immigrants etc.) Cyrohdn3 (talk) 14:01, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

Anyway fine if you insist on using /ɨ/. But maybe we need better reserch and documentation first about the phonnetics and consistent transcription convention (currently even Wikipedia and Wiktionary disagree). The romanisation wuudn't be correct tho; ISO 15919 obviosly dusn't have a convention for ɨ, tho it's close tu ŭ with represents kutriyalugaram ɯ. Jaiganesh.kumaran (talk) 14:49, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
