This is the English Wiktionary: it aims to describe all words of all languages, with definitions and descriptions in English only. For example, see dictionnaire (a French word). In order to find a French definition of that word, you would visit the equivalent page in the French Wiktionary. See also Multilingual coordination and Multilingual statistics.

Quick reminder: we are not Wikipedia. The slightest spelling (or capitalization) difference merits a separate entry here (not a redirect.) I've deleted wiktionarians for you. --Connel MacKenzie 17:02, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary!

If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW; request the full history import instead, at WT:ID.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian. --Connel MacKenzie 17:02, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay,...

[edit]

"...slightest spelling (or capitalization) difference merits a separate entry here (not a redirect.),..."

I can easily, yet provisionally, accept that.

I would, therefore, contend that these sorts of variations would need the intermediate stub articles, that would lead to the larger pairs.

That is especially true regarding any issue where wiktionary &/or wikipedia define | describe themselves. Certainly, "wiktionary", "wiktionarian", et al, readily fit that category.

I would, further, advocate that any articles which define wiktionary - characteristics would be afforded more prominent links. I do contend that such a need is demonstrated by the fact that I do not recall seeing these pages prior to today. It is my contention that I do not have a further recollection of these pages, or if I do, it is not clear.

If you would continue to object to my solution to these several issues, then, please do assist me to achieve more appropriate alternatives.

Also, I've written comments on several issues, including this, that have no response:

You

[edit]

do leave me confused.

I ask questions that don't get answered;

in other cases, the answers are difficult to interpret:

Now, I had thought that on some of your pages, there are recommendations to, where appropriate, link to wikipedia.

Yesterday, I've realized that you are deleting these links, w/o explanation.

What are the regs?

  • We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen.
  • A hopeful society has institutions of science and medicine that do not cut ethical corners, and that recognize the matchless value of every life. Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research – human cloning in all its forms … creating or implanting embryos for experiments … creating human-animal hybrids … and buying, selling, or patenting human embryos. Human life is a gift from our Creator – and that gift should never be discarded, devalued, or put up for sale.
