syncratic

[edit]

The definition you added to syncratic ("Having a mix of theologies or ideologies") looks like a typo for syncretic ("Combining disparate elements in one system"). See http://polytheist.com/speaking-of-syncretism/2015/03/17/is-there-a-difference-between-syncretic-and-syncretistic/ . I've seen some blog type hits where people might be using syncratic (joint decision making) as distinct from ex cathedra rules, but that's a different sense if it exists. Should we then add it under a pseudonym header since there is a confusion?BuyAthenaTroy (talk) 04:26, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've changed it to a misspelling. Vox Sciurorum (talk) 13:40, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Chinese

[edit]

Hi, please refrain from adding Chinese entries unless you have any basic understanding of Chinese. The pronunciations are wrong, the formatting is wrong, the definitions aren't right... basically almost everything is wrong. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 02:55, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

I've gone ahead and deleted the two entries with module errors- it would take longer for someone who knows Chinese to fix them than to create them from scratch. The fact that the {{rfd}} template was added with an argument for not deleting (it didn't make sense, so I could be wrong about the intent) really makes me wonder. @Chuck Entz: It's because it was marked for speedy deletion by RcAlex36, but BuyAthenaTroy decided to change it to an RFD for a discussion, I guess. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:10, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

This includes translations. You do not know what you're doing. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:24, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sure I do, look at 智利人 and 加州人. I am a descendent anyways. We are always learning and will learn more and better for the future.BuyAthenaTroy (talk) 03:26, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
They didn't come from you but from Google Translate. Please do yourself a favour and stop adding Chinese translations and creating Chinese entries. RcAlex36 (talk) 03:30, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
You didn't make 智利人 right, and other editors had to pick up after you. 加州人 just seems to be piecing things together. All the other entries have been riddled with errors (including actual template errors that literally say "Error" in red). — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:34, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Why don't you do me a favor and be more welcoming and motivated to improve? Rome wasn't built in a day nor was Beijjing, perhaps you should consider that this is a wiki with many contributing to improve it all together. That is people's big complaint about the Mediawiki foundation, the glib attitudes, the superiority complex, the nannying, the biting of the newcomers.BuyAthenaTroy (talk) 03:42, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I apologize if that's the impression you have. We have very strict regulations to ensure the dictionary is accurate and usable, and blatant errors are not tolerated. There's an expectation, also, that editors edit in languages they have some knowledge in, which you have not quite demonstrated. I just want you to think twice before making edits and make sure you use the "Show preview" button to at least see that there aren't module errors (bold words in red). Also, it would be nice if you could add your self-assessment of language proficiency using {{Babel}} on your userpage. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:53, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is a wiki, but, as they say at Wikipedia, some competence is required. I've been here for almost a decade and I've had a year of Mandarin at the university level as well as a degree in linguistics, but I don't edit Chinese entries except to fix obvious problems. I'm not asking more of you than I expect for myself. Chuck Entz (talk) 04:05, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict)How many White Anglo-Saxon Protestants speak Anglo-Saxon (a.k.a Old English)? You aren't born knowing which characters to use. Even based on the year of Beginning Mandarin I took way back in the '80s I could see that you had the wrong word for San Francisco, and I'm not Chinese at all. Plus, you had no clue what to do with the parameters and ended up with module errors.
Wiktionary is a reference work, so you shouldn't add anything that you don't absolutely know. As for the formatting: you should always click "Show preview" to make sure that you have everything right before you click "Publish changes" to save your edits.
