Attested since 1240s, a regular apocope of Old Italian amistade (as a personal name since 12th c.), from Vulgar Latin *amicitas, *amicitatem, from Latin amīcus, based on amīcitia. Eventually displaced with latinism amicizia. Compare Sicilian amistà and amistati.
