User:-sche/pronunciation problems
When complete, this page will list everything that can go wrong in a ===Pronunciation=== section, to aid those who seek to find and fix errors in pronunciation sections. Additions are welcomed.
Many of these issues also affect Rhymes: pages.
pronunciation templates don't contain pronunciations
[edit]This is always a problem. It can be due to a typo (one too many or too few vertical bars) or can be due to a user writing something like {{IPA|//|lang=foo}}, {{IPA|...|lang=foo}}, {{IPA|/.../|lang=foo}} or {{IPA|[...]|lang=foo}}. The latter will not show up in Category:Pronunciation templates without a pronunciation.
deprecated or nonstandard IPA characters are used
[edit]- from Wiktionary:Todo/Entries containing obsolete IPA characters
- and Wiktionary talk:Todo#IPA_cleanup_things
This is always a problem. Replacement of the deprecated or nonstandard characters with their modern equivalents can be automated if only pronunciation sections are edited.
The following are deprecated characters:
- ʤ (should be dʒ or d͡ʒ)
- ʦ (should be ts or t͡s)
- ʧ (should be tʃ or t͡ʃ)
- ʣ (should be dz or d͡z)
- ʥ (should be dʑ or d͡ʑ)
- ʨ (should be tɕ or t͡ɕ)
The following are nonstandard:
- g (in IPA transcriptions, ɡ should be used)
- ε (U+3B5) (should be ɛ (U+25B))
- ǝ (U+1DD) (should be ə (U+259))
- : (should be ː)
- ı (U+0131) (should be ɪ (U+026A))
- ' (should be ˈ, except in some languages, where it is also misused for ʼ)
- ’ and ‛ and ʻ might also be misused as stress marks, or as ejective markers, and it's even possible that stress marks and ejective markers are misused for each other
- , (should be ˌ)
In English, r should be replaced with ɹ except in exceptional cases, and /ɻ/ should be replaced with /ɹ/ (but [ɻ] may be OK).
" is used outside of Template:X-SAMPA
[edit]If a pronunciation section contains " outside of an X-SAMPA transcription, this is usually, but not always, an indication that something is wrong. Sometimes, it is only because a pronunciation has a <ref>; this is OK.
accents are indicated by means other than Template:a
[edit]Example: [1]. Robert Ullmann and Thryduulf suggested looking for (RP), (''RP''), ''RP'', [RP], etc. (And (US), [WEAE], etc.)
other irregularities exist
[edit]- <tt> (indicates something is wrong, usually that an X-SAMPA pronunciation needs to be templatised)
- [[Rhymes: (should be templatised...or are raw links OK?)
- {| (i.e. table syntax, indicates something is wrong)
- IPA, enPR or SAMPA/X-SAMPA not as a template name (indicates something is wrong, usually that a transcription needs to be templatised)
- AHD (indicates something is wrong, usually needs to be changed to enPR)
- enPR after IPA or SAMPA/X-SAMPA before IPA (should be changed to the standard order: enPR, IPA, X-SAMPA)
{{a}}
is used in the middle or end of a line (especially following a templated or non-templated transcription) rather than the start{{IPA}}
, and any other templates which should, don't contain either / or [{{IPA}}
, or any other template, contains an opening / or [ but not a closing / or ]
