[edit]From Proto-Germanic *Twajjô (“the twofold one”), originally weak form of lost adjective *twajjaz (“twofold”), from Proto-Indo-European *dwoyHós, whence also Lithuanian dvejì, Sanskrit द्वय (dvaya, “double, twofold”), Ancient Greek δοιός (doiós, “double, twofold”). Compare Proto-Germanic *Frōdô (“the wise one”, personal name) (whence Old Norse Fróði), from *frōdaz (“wise”) (whence Old Norse fróðr).
